U.S.S. Missouri

The first time I went to Hawaii, I went to the USS Arizona memorial and toured the USS Bowfin submarine.  This time, I took a tour of the battleship USS Missouri.

The Missouri is probably most famous for the time it was taken over by terrorists, who launched nuclear warheads toward Honolulu, but were foiled in the end by a former Navy SEAL working on board as a cook who looked a lot like Steven Seagal.

Here’s a picture of the Missouri’s main guns:

It’s not exactly trick photography, but it’s funny how perspective can make things look a lot bigger that they really are.  Even though they appear huge, those are really only 16-inch guns.

This plaque is where the Japanese surrendered at the end of World War II.  I imagine that when General MacArthur asked Admiral Halsey where the surrender ceremony should be held, Halsey realized that the useless brass plate installed on the deck might come in handy after all.
