Beginning of a new science fiction short story.
Professor Corbin Levinston was double-checking the footnotes of the paper he was planning to present at the American Association of Physicists conference that weekend, when someone knocked softly on the door. Since it was almost ten o’clock at night, it was long past his scheduled student consultation hours, but he decided he could use a break. “Come in.”
The door opened, and a young man who looked vaguely familiar entered. “I’m sorry to bother you, Professor Levinston, but I was wondering if I could talk to you about something.”
Levinston gestured toward a chair. “I’m sorry; I don’t recall your name. Too many students in the introductory classes.”
