A Happy Surprise
Even though I lived in England during the Tom Baker years, I was never a fan of Dr. Who while growing up. But when the new series started up, I heard enough good things about it from friends that I started watching. And I enjoyed the first several episodes, but I still didn’t consider myself a fan of the show — it was just something fun to watch.
And then came the episode “Father’s Day.” That’s the one that made me start calling myself a Dr. Who fan. It was a brilliant story about love and loss and sacrifice.
The writer of that particular episode was Paul Cornell. So, you can imagine how astonished and pleased I was to run across the following on his blog today, in which he listed his favorite short fiction of 2010:
‘That Leviathan, Whom Thou Hast Made’ by Eric James Stone (Analog September), is a refreshingly positive depiction of interaction between human religion and aliens, in this case between a Mormon missionary and enormous creatures made from solar plasma.

Excellent episode. Very emotional. I was a bit confused about the creatures, however, I felt they could have used some more explaining. i missed your Leviathan story, somehow. I’ll have to look for that one!
That’s a happy surprise indeed!
Neuter Kimball rises triumphant! This is awesome. You deserve every syllable of praise; Leviathan is a great story.
BTW, Cairo LOVES the idea horses. Thanks again for the gift.
Thanks very much. And well done on such an excellent story. I\’ve nominated it for the Nebula. Cheers.
