Keep it going, Eric! Ra, ra, and all that jazz ;)

That’s a doozy of a cliffhanger. I hope you keep it tense for at least a little bit of chapter 55 — i.e., show other scenes, flashback, etc. Meanwhile, let the reader stew for a little bit on the cliffhanger itself.

Cliffhanger? Did I leave off the part where he wakes up next to Suzanne Pleshette and Patrick Duffy is in the shower? ;-)

I’m afraid the only gimmick I have planned in order to prolong the suspense for the reader will be the extra page emblazoned PART V before they get to the next chapter. (And, of course, the delay as I write the next chapter, which is already about 3/4 done.)

All right, if you insist. I’m all for reading the next chapter as soon as possible, after all. However, I must point out that, if you were Terry Brooks, you’d take this moment to switch back to what people are thinking and talking about at the hold, and focus on the intrigues of Uwixa. And we wouldn’t get the cliffhanger resolved for another 150 pages.

And if you were Robert Jordan, it would stay unresolved until at least two books later in the series.

That’s what I get for having all three of my viewpoint characters on the same journey. I can’t get away from them.

I won’t make that same mistake in the next book. I’ll have viewpoint characters who don’t even meet each other.

The trick is to have them get separated. Through a battle, or an earthquake, or a bored, peripatetic wormhole.

Then you can have a Geraden-trekking-through-the-rocky-wastes chapter. Followed by an Allonna-trudging-through-the-forests chapter. Followed by an Aumekor-sitting-around-waiting-for-someone-to-help-him-onto-his-horse chapter.

    Very exciting stuff.

Maybe I’ll work those into the rewrite.
