How confident are you that there will only be 14 more? Is the story sufficiently clear in your mind or is there any chance it may stretch into 15 or 16? These may be stupid questions.
That’s a good question, actually. The plot as outlined currently has 65 chapters. But back when I had completed 45 chapters, the outline had only 61 chapters. I have a four-chapter pattern of viewpoint character rotation, and I felt I needed one more loop through on the section I was writing. So it’s definitely possible for the predicted number of chapters to change as I write.
However, the events that must happen from this point until the climax are things I have thought about a lot as I’ve been leading up to them, while the middle of the novel was a lot more nebulous in my mind. So I think I will make it from here to the climax without adding any chapters. I made need a bit more space for denouement at the end than I currently have planned, but I’ll burn that bridge when I come to it.
Can you estimate now about how many chapters are left to write?
14, plus an epilogue.
