Movie Title equals Song Title

Published on May 10, 2004 by

I’ve been thinking about songs from movie soundtracks. Not songs from movie musicals, nor songs that characters in the movie sing. (Yes, I think there’s a slight difference there. In musicals, the characters sing their feelings in situations where real people would not actually sing. In movies about singers, however, the character will sing in situations where a singer would sing. See the difference?) Nor am I thinking of popular songs that were then added to a movie soundtrack. I’m thinking about songs that were either written for the soundtrack (“If You Leave” by OMD, for the Pretty in Pink soundtrack) or that were rather obscure until they were put on a movie soundtrack (“500 Miles” by the Proclaimers, on the Benny & Joon soundtrack.)

Then there’s an even more specific category: the soundtrack songs that have the same name as the movie.

So, in the same-name category, I came up with four that I really like:

  1. The World Is Not Enough” by Garbage
  2. Footloose” by Kenny Loggins
  3. A View to a Kill” by Duran Duran
  4. Ghostbusters” by Ray Parker, Jr. (and, post-lawsuit, Huey Lewis)

I’m actually hard pressed to think of many more (other than the rest of the Bond themes), and I’m not particularly fond of the others I came up with: “Weird Science” by Oingo Boingo and “Pretty in Pink” by the Psychedelic Furs.

Anyone have other suggestions for good movie songs with the same name as the movie?

What about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. True, the actual title of the song is “Turtle Power”, but they do say the title of the movie during the chorus, and it is a great song.

  2. Michael says:

I like Weird Science, but to add another James Bond film, I also like “Live and Let Die,” by Paul McCartney.

  3. Audrey says:

Against All Odds – great song, lousy movie.

A Hard Day’s Night — the Beatles (best rock band ever, I say).

If you’re looking for a good song and movie with the same title, but that are unrelated, I would suggest “Unforgiven.” Great movie with Clint Eastwood. Great song by Metallica.

    Movies named after songs:
    You Light Up My Life
    Chances Are
    My Girl

Okay, smarties, can anyone think of songs that were named after, but not written in conjunction with, movies or books?

    These come to mind:
    Wuthering Heights (Kate Bush)
    Murder by Numbers (The Police)

  7. Kaimi,

“Born Free” definitely fits. I’m not certain about “The Way We Were.”

    mqstone,

You’re a troublemaker. Next you’ll be naming The Movie Which Must Not Be Named.

    Eric,

Doesn’t “The Way We Were” meet your criteria of song-movie same name. Also, “Born Free.”

    Hubba,

One to add to your list (song named after movie, but not otherwise related):

Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Deep Blue Something)

  9. Kaimi says:

And in the “I can’t believe I forgot to mention this” category (especially since Footloose was already mentioned):

    Flashdance.

    Also:

Beauty and the Beast. (Or is that a musical?)
    Charlotte’s Web.

  10. mqstone says:

“Coming to America” The movie with Eddie Murphy, the song by Neil Diamond.

“Better Off Dead” The movie with John Cusack, and it had a song with the same title.

  11. Kaimi says:

A few others that have come to mind:

    Flash Gordon
    Chitty-chitty-bang-bang

  12. Deb says:

How about Stayin\’ Alive? And another Bond theme, Live and Let Die?

  13. Carolyn says:

The song from Lost Boys is called “Lost in the Shadows (Lost Boys)” so it’s pretty close.

And the themes to the Mortal Kombat movies by the Immortals are pretty kickin’!

    Choose your destiny…flawless victory! Bwahahaha!
