Remember, remember…

Remember, remember the fifth of November:
Gunpowder, treason, and plot.
We see no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

I learned that little rhyme when I lived in England more than twenty years ago.

Most Americans are not familiar with the Gunpowder Plot. It was an attempt to blow up the Parliament building. Fortunately, the plot was discovered and stopped. But the date when that disaster was averted is still commemorated in England each year.

That attempt to destroy Parliament happened on November 5. 1605 — three hundred and ninety-eight years ago. And though no one was killed (except for the conspirators, who were executed), the 5th of November is still remembered today.

How long will the 11th of September be remembered?

I see no reason why it should ever be forgot.
