Writer Interview: Brandon Sanderson

This was originally written for the Bloggernacle Times, but since BT doesn’t appear to be coming out of hiatus any time soon, I’m posting it here.

A few months ago, I stayed up until 2:30 in the morning reading. I had not intended to stay up that late, but I was engrossed in a new fantasy novel and I wanted to see how it ended. The novel was Elantris, by Brandon Sanderson, and it’s the best fantasy novel I’ve read in quite a while. (See more reviews of Elantris here.)

Since Brandon is LDS, I figured I could interview him as a way of beginning to shift out of my “less active blogger” status here at Bloggernacle Times. He was kind enough to consent to an email interview, and here are the results:

The Cursed Play

I was supposed to do a book signing on Saturday, but the book distributor sent the books to the wrong place, so it got cancelled. That gave me a chance to go see my sister Carolyn as the Second Witch in Macbeth at the Old Globe down in San Diego.

The trip also gave me a chance to meet Bloggernacle superstar Kaimi and his wife, Mardell.

Carolyn did a marvelous job, of course, and the play was well done overall. I don’t think I’d ever actually seen Macbeth before.

Unfortunately, I did not escape the curse. As I was driving home, the AC/alternator belt in my car broke a few miles from Baker, California, which is on the edge of the Mojave Desert.

Writing Update

Just because I haven’t been blogging doesn’t mean I haven’t been writing.

I’ve written a short story called “A Member of the Peronista Party,” which is a story set in the same universe as “By the Hands of Juan Peron.” However, based on my Thursday writers group’s feedback, I think it doesn’t really work as a short story. However, the work isn’t wasted, as I think it will fit just fine into the novel I plan on writing about that universe. (Speaking of “By the Hands of Juan Peron,” it’s been rejected by Analog and by F&SF. I’ve sent it out to SciFiction.)

I’ve also written a short story called “Bird-Dropping and Sunday,” for the Codex summer contest. The story had to be based on at least one of the following fairy tales or myths:

I’d never heard of those last two, but that didn’t stop me from incorporating all four of them into the story.

The other entries in the contest were all very well done, which is why I was surprised to find out that mine had won. That’s the second Codex contest in a row that I’ve won (the other with “By the Hands of Juan Peron.”) They like me! They really like me!
