Name changes
Two of the names I used for important characters in my novel were, unbeknownst to me, used by other authors for major characters in other fantasy novels. I have, therefore, changed the names slightly. This is not because of copyright law, because not only are character names not copyrightable, but even if they were, copyright law only prevents me from copying the names, not from coming up with them independently. (One of the names, Geraden, is a word meaning “straight” in German, which is where I got that name, and is probably where the other author derived the name as well.)
Neither is it a result of trademark law, because I don’t think the names were trademarked by the other authors, and even if they were, trademark law would relate to using those names for the marketing of the book, which I am not.
I just don’t like having the names be identical. So I ended up changing one vowel in each name, and since the vowels were unstressed, in English they’re pronounced pretty much the same as they were before. (You can get away with pronouncing most unstressed vowel sounds in English as a schwa — the upside-down e symbol that indicates an “uh” sound.)
Episode III
I just got back from seeing Revenge of the Sith. It’s better than the previous two films, but anyone who thinks it’s in the same class as any of the original trilogy should seek help from a mental health professional.
Just call me a rolling Stone
So I kept going, and while it’s now after midnight, I still count any work before going to sleep as part of the previous day.
Total word count for the day: 4026.
Total word count on the novel: 149,686.
Total words left to go: 0.
In other words, I’m done. Finished. Finito.
Next comes the revising.
When you’re on a roll…
…keep rolling.
Chapter 65 is done (although I’m not entirely satisfied with it.) Only the epilogue remains. And despite the fact that I had to work today (and I don’t work on my novel during work hours), this has been my most productive day ever on the novel, in terms of word count: 3221.
These are the voyages…
I just watched the last episode of Star Trek: Enterprise (which I didn’t watch on Friday because I got together with some friends for our traditional Friday the 13th Buffy the Vampire Slayer party.)
It was a good last episode. I’d rate Voyager’s final episode as my clear favorite of the Star Trek franchise’s final episodes, but I’m not sure how I’d rank them after that — except that the final episode of the original series (”Turnabout Intruder”) is at the bottom.
Here’s hoping that after a brief hiatus, Star Trek returns to the screen in one form or another.
