In Memory, in the mail

Sent off my SF short story “In Memory” to the Writers of the Future contest. Not sure how long the response time is. I sent them a story about ten years ago, and I don’t recall how long it took before they rejected it.

Still waiting on a response from the Phobos contest for “The Man Who Moved the Moon.” They announce their winners in mid-October, but I’ve heard they contact the winners before that.

Football

Well, I’m blogging wirelessly from The Parents’TM house again. Monday Night football is irrelevant again for me, but this time it’s because Jonathan’s team already beat me.

We got the HDTV signal working properly, so it’s 61 inches of highly-detailed football.

BYU v. Air Force

My cousin Scott and I have a little wager over this game. He’s pessimistic about BYU, and so he says they will lose by at least twelve.

I’m optimistic, because I think our defense will do a good job of containing Air Force’s running attack. (Because Air Force’s option attack is meant to work by spreading the defense and getting outside, rather than just powering straight up the field. I think our defense has shown that they can move laterally very well, as long as someone stays home to contain in case of misderection plays.) And I think our offense will do better than last week. So I’m predicting BYU will win by at least seven.

If either of us is correct in his prediction, the other will buy the breakfast buffet on our trip down to Vegas next month.

Little David

I got to spend some time with my six-month-old nephew David this evening. He is so cute; even though he was a little bit fussy at times, most of the time it was easy enough to get him to smile, and except for the time he was hungry he quieted down pretty quickly if I would hold him and sort of bounce while rocking side-to-side.

I guess I’ll be buying Scott some breakfast next month…

Because on the last play of the game, when they already had the game won, Air Force scored a touchdown to widen their margin of victory.

Attack of the Killer Patriot Act from 20,000 Fathoms

Unfortunately, what I’ve written for this post appears to be too long for Movable Type to process properly, so I’ve uploaded it to a page here.

Stoning

A couple of days ago, the Nigerian women who was sentenced to be stoned to death was reprieved. Apparently, this got some people interested in how to stone someone to death, because my server logs show that two different people clicked through to my blog looking for information on how to stone somebody. As it turns out, I’m at the top of the listings (for now, anyway) with one of my creative writing exercises.

Breakthrough

I had some inspiration this morning that I think will get me going again on Chapter 12 of my novel. But I’ve got a major headache tonight, so I’m not up to actually writing it. But at least I feel excited about writing it again.

The Others

Last night I started watching The Others, a ghost movie starring Nicole Kidman. It wasn’t as creepy as The Ring, but it was creepy enough that I stopped watching it in the middle and finished it tonight. So, if you haven’t seen it and are in the mood for a little creepery, I recommend it.
